Section 9 - Chapter on Degrees

Original content

English translation

Make not your soul a nest of Hell, Make not your mind a house of absurdities. Wander not around vanity and the impossible, Linger not at the door of the house of fantasy. Let go of impossible thoughts, So that you may find admittance to that court. In this boundless ocean, like a frog, Flap your hands and feet, who knows, perhaps. For that abode of permanence is for you, And this abode of mortality is no place for you. That abode of permanence is prepared for you; Leave today and strive for tomorrow. In the world, ugly and beautiful, left and right, Are for the unworthy descendants of Adam. There are many steps towards a high roof; How can you be content with just one step? The first step in it is forbearance, Which is indeed the master of knowledge. You gathered on the first step: Reason, soul, form, and substance. Know the truth that in the world, For the benefit of mankind, There is no better ladder-rung than knowledge and action for the pre-eternal sky. For the high and low stations, The wisdom of the soul strengthens the heart. On this path, even if you do not do that, Flap your hands and feet; you will not suffer loss. Whoever sows the seed of laziness, Laziness will bring him disbelief. Whoever aligns himself with ignorance and laziness, His foot slipped and his work was lost. I know of nothing worse than laziness; Laziness turned even heroes like Rustam into cowards. They created you for work, They tailored the robe of creation for you. Why should you be content with old rags, When you do not covet those fine robes? The truthful one makes the two worlds one, The lover makes the three stations one. From where will you attain sovereignty and kingdom, When you are idle sixty days a month? Through idle days and easy nights, You will not reach the Sasanian throne. The crown and throne of kings, without the moisture of the cloud, Consider as the shaft of the mace and the hilt of the sword. For the sake of silver and the food of the heavens, Before a handful of mean, worthless, and base people, Do not sew a full purse, do not tear the veil, Do not lick the bowl, and do not buy into cajolery. If you possess knowledge, be mountain-like in forbearance, Do not be vexed by the calamities of time. Knowledge without forbearance is a candle without light; Both together are like the honey of the bee. Honey without wax is the secret of the free; Wax without honey is fit for the fire. Pass from this house of generation and corruption, Sever ties with the origin and go to the return. For in this waterless mound of earth, The wind-shaped fire is a mirage.
