Section 26 - The Tale

Original content

English translation

Thawri asked Bayazid of Bastam, For the sake of devotion and a good name. He asked a good question and wept, Saying, 'O Elder, tell me, who is the oppressor?' The Elder gave him an answer, And administered his potion from the Book. He said, 'An oppressor is a wretched person Who, for a single moment in a day and night, Forgets Him out of negligence, And is not His devoted servant. If you forget Him for even a single breath, There is no idle oppressor like you. And if you are present and invoke His name, But violate His decrees through your sins— Remember Him in such a way that, with heart and soul, You become absent from both space and time.'
