Section 22 - On Independence from Other Than God the Exalted and Clinging to Him in Truth

Original content

English translation

For the orchestration of affairs by you and me, There is wordlessness in His self-sufficiency. To His self-sufficiency, what is disbelief and what is religion? To His wordlessness, what is doubt and what is certainty? His self-sufficiency seeks neediness from you, Guarding you, and seeking gratitude from you. Know in truth that God exists, For worthy command and wisdom. Obedience and disobedience are a matter of shame or pride for you, Otherwise, to Him, they are of one and the same color. How can it be reached by intellect, hands, and feet, If a servant wishes to reach God? He is your shepherd, yet you prefer the wolf; He is your caller, yet you are needy. Wolf and Joseph are idols to you, small and great, Otherwise, to Him, Joseph and the wolf are one. For His grace, what is an obstacle and what is an aid? For His wrath, what is Moses and what is Pharaoh? The soul and the heavens are His creation; Blessed is the one who is His chosen. What honor is there for Him from intellect and human beauty? What greatness is there for Him from the soul and the heavens? The heavens and the one who turns the heavens Are a mill and the millers. Command is the decree, and intellect is the decree-taker; The soul is the painter, and nature is the pattern-receiver. The motion of the heavens without the stillness of the earth Is like an ant in the breath of a dragon. The dragon does not swallow the ant; The rotation of the heavens passes heedlessly. Unknowingly, in the womb of negation ('La'), It has put to work the mill of affliction. Your life is like a grain in its mouth, Your feast is a companion to its mourning. With you is that which, for coming and going, Your bowl has four feet. Except by His grace, you will not reach His path, Even if you are strong-willed in His obedience. The one who relies on their own hands and feet, How can they reach God?
