متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

بود شهری بزرگ در حد غورواندر آن شهر مردمان همه کور
There was a large city in the region of Ghor,
And in that city, the people were all blind.
پادشاهی در آن مکان بگذشتلشکر آورد و خیمه زد بر دشت
A king passed through that place,
He brought his army and pitched his tent on the plain.
داشت پیلی بزرگ با هیبتاز پی جاه و حشمت و صولت
He had a large and majestic elephant,
For the sake of rank, majesty, and power.
مردمان را ز بهر دیدن پیلآرزو خاست زانچنان تهویل
A desire arose in the people to see the elephant,
Out of curiosity for such a formidable creature.
چند کور از میان آن کورانبر پیل آمدند از آن عوران
A few blind men from among those people
Came toward the elephant from among those destitute ones,
تا بدانند شکل و هیآت پیلهریکی تازیان در آن تعجیل
So that they might know the shape and form of the elephant,
Each one rushing in that haste.
آمدند و به دست می سودندزانکه از چشم بی بصر بودند
They came and rubbed it with their hands,
Since they were sightless in their eyes.
هریکی را به لمس بر عضویاطلاع اوفتاد بر جزوی
Each one's hand fell upon a limb,
And through touch, they became informed of a part.
هریکی صورت محالی بستدل و جان در پی خیالی بست
Each one formed an impossible image,
Binding their heart and soul to a fantasy.
چون بر اهل شهر باز شدندبرشان دیگران فراز شدند
When they returned to the people of the city,
Others gathered around them.
آرزو کرد هریکی زیشانآنچنان گمرهان و بدکیشان
Every one of them desired to know,
Those misled and ill-faithed ones.
صورت و شکل پیل پرسیدندوآنچه گفتند جمله بشنیدند
They asked about the form and shape of the elephant,
And they heard all that was said.
آنکه دستش بسوی گوش رسیددیگری حال پیل ازو پرسید
The one whose hand had reached the ear,
When another asked him of the elephant's state,
گفت شکلیست سهمناک عظیمپهن و صعب و فراخ همچو گلیم
Said: 'It is a huge, terrifying shape,
Broad and hard and wide like a carpet.'
وانکه دستش رسیدی زی خرطومگفت گشتست مر مرا معلوم
And the one whose hand reached the trunk
Said: 'It has become known to me;
راست چون ناودان میانه تهیستسهمناکست و مایهٔ تبهیست
It is exactly like a pipe, hollow in the middle,
Terrifying and a source of destruction.'
وانکه را بد ز پیل ملموسشدست و پای سطبر پر بوسش
And the one whose touch of the elephant
Was its thick leg, full of creases,
گفت شکلش چنانکه مضبوط استراست همچون عمود مخروط است
Said: 'Its shape, as it is determined,
Is exactly like a conical pillar.'
هریکی دیده جزوی از اجزاهمگان را فتاده ظن خطا
Each one had seen only a part of the parts,
And so they all fell into the error of opinion.
هیچ دل را ز کلی آگه نیعلم با هیچ کور همره نی
No heart was aware of the whole,
Knowledge was not a companion to any of the blind.
جملگی را خیالهای محالکرده مانند غتفره به جوال
All of them held impossible fantasies,
Like a jumble packed into a sack.
از خدایی خلایق آگه نیستعقلا را در این سخن ره نیست
Creation is not aware of Divinity;
The wise have no path in this discourse.
