Section 35 - The Tale of the Bird and the Zoroastrian

Original content

English translation

Have you not heard that without the moisture of a cloud, A bird found its daily food at the door of a Zoroastrian? A Muslim then said to the Zoroastrian: 'O skilled and eloquent one, This act of generosity will not be accepted from you, Even though the little birds pick up the seeds.' The Zoroastrian replied: 'Even if He does not choose me, At least He sees this labor of mine. For He is generous and beneficent; He does not equate stinginess with generosity.' Ja'far sacrificed his hands in His path; God gave him wings in place of hands. Do not tie your heart to the deeds and vanities of creation; Tie your heart to Him, and you will be delivered from grief and bondage. None but God will untie your knot; By God, nothing comes from creation. As much as you can, take no friend other than Him; Do not count creation as anything at all. Make no support of creation; Make no refuge except at His threshold. For all these places of support are mere illusion; The support of God's mercy is sufficient. As long as you remain, your bread remains; It is the custom of His blessings and your soul. In the world of love and seeking, know both As the Persian 'bab' and the Arabic 'ab'. Since you have no news of the path of need, You are in a veil like the layers of an onion. As long as you are separated from the light of Moses, You are blind by day like the bird of Jesus. First, for the sake of His heart-pleasing love, Make your head into feet like a pen, and seek Him, Until you reach that place, swift and sound, Where you realize that you no longer need to seek.
