ابلهی دید اشتری به چرا
گفت نقشت همه کژست چرا

گفت اشتر که اندرین پیکار
عیب نقاش می کنی هش دار

در کژی ام مکن به نقش نگاه
تو ز من راه راست رفتن خواه

نقشم از مصلحت چنان آمد
از کژی راستی کمان امد

تو فضول از میانه بیرون بر
گوش خر در خور است با سر خر

هست شایسته گرچه ت آمد خشم
طاق ابرو برای جفتی چشم

هرچه او کرده عیب او مکنید
با بد و نیک جز نکو مکنید

دست عقل از سخت بنیرو شد
چشم خورشیدبین ز ابرو شد

زشت و نیکو به نزد اهل خرد
سخت نیک است از او نیاید بد

به خدایی سزا مر او را دان
شب و شبگیر رو مر او را خوان

آن نکوتر که هرچه زو بینی
گرچه زشت آن همه نکو بینی

جسم را قسم راحت آمد و رنج
روح را راحت است همچون گنج

لیک ماری شکنج بر سر اوست
دست و پای خرد برابر اوست

English translation

A fool saw a camel grazing, And said, 'Why is your shape all crooked?' The camel said, 'In this dispute, Beware, you are finding fault with the Painter. Do not look at my shape in its crookedness; Demand of me to walk the straight path. My shape came to be so out of wisdom; From crookedness comes the straightness of the bow. Cast your meddlesome interference aside; An ass's ear is suited to an ass's head. It is fitting, even though it made you angry, The arch of the eyebrow for a pair of eyes. Whatever He has made, do not criticize; Do nothing but good with both the good and the bad. The hand of intellect became highly powerful, And the sun-seeing eye was shielded by the eyebrow. Ugly and beautiful, in the eyes of the wise, Are exceedingly good, for no evil comes from Him. Deem Him alone worthy of divinity; Go at night and dawn to invoke Him. It is best that whatever you see from Him, Even if seemingly ugly, you see it all as beautiful. Comfort and suffering are the portion of the body, For the soul, there is comfort like a treasure, But a coiled serpent lies upon its head, And the hands and feet of intellect are helpless before it.'
