Section 37 - On Love and Affection
Original content
English translation
Lovers are intoxicated towards His presence, With intellect in the sleeve and life in hand. So that when they ride the Buraq of the heart towards Him, They may scatter all in His stirrup. They sacrifice soul and heart in His path, And count themselves of that number. What value do intellect and soul have before Him? They sacrifice heart and religion, and even disbelief. The veil of lovers is thinner, The design of these veils is more delicate. The dominant of love is its dominated, The inverse has explained it to you. When the cloud goes far from the sun, The world of love becomes full of light. For the cloud, like an infidel, is dark and turbid, Water is both beneficial and harmful to all. A little of it is the life of man, While a lot of it is the affliction of the soul. Many a monotheist is a lover of His presence, For love is the veil of His glory. The narrator of instruction is not bad, But the pain-experienced lover is good. Look at the composition of love, From it, all is tribulation by miscopying. O lover of the beauty of the Invisible Presence! Until you seek union with the appearance of the Unseen, You will not drink the draft of His meeting, Nor taste the sweetness of His intimate prayer. Before His Unity, there is neither old nor new, All are nothing, nothing exists but Him. Since you know One and say One, Why do you run towards two, three, and four? Since being a servant has brought you pride and shame, O created one, what business have you with the Eternal? With Alif, Ba and Ta are companions, Consider Ba and Ta as idols, Alif as Allah. Flail your hands and feet in the stream, But when you reach the sea, speak no more of the stream. Your speech is still a reaching of the hand, Your spiritual state is still a foot in the snare. Go into the ocean of justice and faith for a moment, With your body naked like wheat and Adam. So that He may accept your repentance completely, So that you do not wander around vanities anymore. You are still a follower of Satan, Without repenting, how can you be a human? You are created, do not speak of the Eternal, O you who have not distinguished head from foot. A hundred thousand veils are on your path, Your resolve is short and lacking. When He gives you admittance at the threshold, Do not ask Him for desires, ask Him for Himself. When God chooses you for friendship, Your bold eye has seen all that is to be seen. When your selfhood packs up its gear, Your gear and throne will find fortune. The world of love does not accept duality; What is this talk of 'me' and 'thee'? It is not fitting under the condition of union To claim friendship and then speak of 'you' and 'he'. How can one who is free become a slave? How can a full vessel be filled? Become entirely Him at His door, for in the universe, Whoever is other than the whole is altogether lacking. When you reach the kiss of the Beloved's glance, Consider His sting as honey, and the thorn as a gillyflower. To clear the rust from the mirror of the free heart, The fingernail of 'La' (negation) is needed to scrape away existence. Do not stray from the path due to inability, Like a ship pregnant with water at every moment. Hold good and bad, beautiful and ugly as one; Receive in your soul whatever God has given you. Did not Azazil, when he looked from the All-Merciful, See mercy and curse as both one and the same? The form of one who stands at the Prince's gate Is like a sail in hand, receptive to the wind.
