Section 38 - On Detachment

Original content

English translation

Whoever seeks the kingdom of detachment, and whoever searches for the guidance of unity, Comfort manifests from within them, and from without there is no adornment. The praise that comes from their display, is actually the abandonment of their own adornment and praise. At the king's door, the beggar seeks bread; but the lover seeks the nourishment of the soul. Lovers have sacrificed heart and soul; they made His remembrance their food day and night. In the spiritual path, detached and swift, they have cast water, fire, and earth to the wind. For in the arena of the age's knowledge, what does it matter to them who are the ignorant or the learned of the era? O brother, on the fire of detachment, consider your own liver as roasted meat, not merely broth. The mean-spirited dog seeks a bone; the lion's claw seeks the marrow of the soul. The man of high ambition seeks no bond; a dog is but a dog, content with a morsel. Speak fewer tales and bring forth your helplessness; leave the bone to the dogs. You have attained loftiness through your essence; why then are you mean-spirited like a dog? Whoever possesses high ambition, both worlds have become their blessing. And whoever is mean-spirited like a dog, is like a dog running after bread. If mystical unveiling becomes a chain upon your body, turn that unveiling into a shoe and strike it upon your head. If you desire the spirit to be free from the body, revolve around 'La' (Negation), for it is the possessor. How will you ever find admittance to your Divinity (Lahut), until Humanity (Nasut) is removed from you? While you are with your 'self', intellect is darkened; the eye of negligence is dazzled by that other world. For your 'Jesus' to reach Divinity, the path lies through the Assembly of the Grave (Jum'at al-Salbut). Annihilate whatever is path or opinion, so that your heart may become the house of God. As long as your ego remains with you in your essence, the Kaaba with your obedience is but a tavern. But if your 'self' is far from your essence, then even the idol-temple becomes for you the 'Inhabited House'. O you who seek taverns full of calamities, you are the son of an ass and an ass-house. It is your own self that brought forth both infidelity and faith; inevitably it brought a color-blinded eye. Without 'you', it is pleasant; with 'you', it is most unpleasant; the master throws the cat from his lap. In pre-eternity, there are no infidelities or faiths; in the purity of the Divine Attribute, such things do not exist.
