Section 1 - On the Oneness of God the Exalted

Original content

English translation

O nurturer of the inner, beautifier of the outer, O bestower of intellect, forgiver of the witless! Creator and Sustainer of earth and time, Protector and Helper of inhabitant and place. All place and inhabitant are from Your handiwork, All time and earth are under Your command. Fire, water, wind, and the stillness of earth, All are without question under the command of Your power. From the Throne to the floor, all is Your creation, Intellect and Soul are Your swift messengers. In every mouth where a tongue revolves, It has life from Your praise within it. Your great and holy names, Are guides to Your bounty, blessing, and generosity. Each one is greater than the Throne, the floor, and the angels, For they are a thousand and one, and a hundred minus one. Each one is associated with a need, Yet the uninitiated are veiled from them. O Lord, by Your grace and mercy, make this heart and soul, An initiate into the vision of Your Name. Infidelity and faith are both running on Your path, Crying out: 'He is One, He has no partner.' He is the Maker, the Honorer, and the Powerful, He is the One and the Triumphant, not like us. He is the Living, the Subsisting, the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful, The Sustainer of creation, the Subduer, and the Forgiver. He is the actor of movement and of stillness, This is 'He is One, He has no partner.' Our helplessness is the proof of His completeness, His power is the deputy of His names. 'No' and 'He' from that abode of the good day, Returned with empty pockets and purses. Higher than imagination, intellect, sense, and analogy, What is there but the God-knowing heart? Wherever there is a Knower on the entire earth, The Throne is like the ground beneath his horseshoe. The eye of the seer considers everything futile, Except for praise for the Creator. He who knows how to make a body from dust, And make the wind a book of speech. Giver of intellect and Inspirer of hearts, Originator of the Soul and Creator of causes. All generation and corruption is from His handiwork, He is the beginning and the end for all creation. Everything returns from Him to Him, Good and evil are all a story with Him. He is the creator of choice in good and evil, He is the motivator of the soul and the creator of the intellect. He made you something from nothing, You were wretched and He made you precious. No heart has a path to His essence, Intellect and soul are unaware of His perfection. The heart of intellect is dazed by His majesty, The intellect of the soul is darkened by His perfection. The First Intellect is a result of His attribute, He has given it a path to His gnosis. Imagination is slow-paced before the glory of His essence, Understanding finds the field narrow before the depth of His description. His fire burnt the wings of intellect, Out of jealousy, He made it His floor-mat. The Soul is a guide in His procession, The Intellect is a novice in His school. What is the intellect in this transient abode, But a forger writing the script of God? There is no path through intellect, imagination, and senses; None is a Knower of God except God. When the glory of His description reveals its face, It snatches away soul and intellect from the intellect. Who would give stability to the intellect, In a station where Gabriel the Trustworthy Becomes smaller than a sparrow out of awe— A Gabriel with all that majesty! When the intellect reaches there, it bows its head; When the bird flies there, it drops its wings. Whatever exists, you called it from root and branch, You called it His partner, keep watch! Except with weak sense and a vile soul, one does not speak of the Eternal as temporal. In the path of His subduing power and the glory of His attribute, Your very existence is enough for His gnosis. How long this intellect that stirs up vanities? How long this revolving sphere and colorful nature? When He showed the way to the intellect by itself, Then He praised it as was fitting: That the first of created things is the Intellect, Higher than the chosen things is the Intellect. The Universal Intellect is one word from His book, The Universal Soul is one footman at His door. He gave perfection to Love through Love, He bound the Intellect with the Intellect's tether. The intellect, like us, is wandering, Baffled like us in the path of His essence. He is the Intellect of intellect and the Soul of soul, That which is higher than these is He. With the demands of intellect, soul, and senses, How can one be a Knower of the Creator? If God had not shown him the way, How would he have become aware of Divinity?
