کرد روزی عمر به رهگذری
سوی جوقی ز کودکان نظری

همه مشغول گشته در بازی
کرده هریک همی سرافرازی

هریکی از پس مصارعتی
بنمودی ز خود مسارعتی

برکشیده برای خط و ادب
جامه از سر برون به رسم عرب

چون عمر سوی کودکان نگرید
حشمتش پردهٔ طرب بدرید

کودکان زو گریختند به تفت
جز که عبدالله زبیر نرفت

گفت عمر ز پیش من به چه فن
تو بنگریختی بگفتا من

چه گریزم ز پیشت ای مکرم
نه تو بیدادگر نه من مجرم

نزد آنکس که دید جوهر خود
چه قبول و چه رد چه نیک و چه بد

میر چون جفت دین و داد بود
خلق را دل ز عدل شاد بود

ور بود رای او سوی بیداد
ملک خود داد سر به سر بر باد

نیک باشی ز دردسر رستی
ور بدی جمله عهد بشکستی

چون گرفتی ز عدل توشهٔ خویش
مرکب تو بود دو منزل پیش

آنچنان شو به حیرت آبادش
که دگر یاد ناید از یادش

English translation

One day Umar, passing by a path, Cast a look toward a group of children. All were busy playing, Each showing off and boasting. Each, after a wrestling match, Demonstrated swiftness and agility. For the sake of play and custom, They had pulled their robes off their heads, in the Arab fashion. When Umar looked towards the children, His awe and majesty tore the veil of their joy. The children fled from him in haste, Except for Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, who did not run. Umar said: 'For what reason, and by what art, Did you not flee from before me?' He said: 'As for me, Why should I flee from before you, O noble one? Neither are you a tyrant, nor am I a criminal. To the one who has seen his own essence, What is acceptance or rejection, what is good or bad? When the ruler is joined with religion and justice, The people's hearts are made glad by justice. But if his opinion is inclined toward injustice, He has completely thrown his kingdom to the wind. If you are good, you are saved from headache; But if you are bad, you have broken the entire covenant. When you have taken your provision from justice, Your steed will be two stages ahead. Become so lost in the abode of wonder That no other memory comes to mind.'
