راد مردی ز غافلی پرسید
چون ورا سخت جلف و جاهل دید

گفت هرگز تو زغفران دیدی
یا جز از نام هیچ نشنیدی

گفت با ماست خورده ام بسیار
صد ره و بیشتر نه خود یکبار

تا ورا گفت راد مرد حکیم
اینت بیچاره اینت قلب سلیم

تو بصل نیز هم نمی دانی
بیهده ریش چند جنبانی

آنکه او نفس خویش نشناسد
نفس دیگر کسی چه پرماسد

وآنکه او دست و پای را داند
او چگونه خدای را داند

انبیا عاجزند از این معنی
تو چرا هرزه می کنی دعوی

چون نمودی بدین سخن برهان
پس بدانی مجرد ایمان

ورنه او از کجا و تو ز کجا
خامشی به ترا تو ژاژ مخا

علما جمله هرزه می لافند
دین نه بر پای هرکسی بافند

English translation

A noble man asked an oblivious person, When he saw him to be very crude and ignorant: 'Have you ever seen saffron, Or have you heard nothing of it but the name?' He said, 'I have eaten it with yogurt many times, A hundred times and more, not just once.' Whereupon the noble wise man said to him, 'What a helpless one, what a simple heart! You do not even know onion; How long will you wag your beard in vain? He who does not know his own self, How can he perceive the self of another? And he who knows [only] hand and foot, How can he know God? The prophets are powerless in this meaning; Why do you make such idle claims? Since you have shown no proof for these words, Then you know only abstract faith. Otherwise, where is He and where are you? Silence is better for you; do not talk nonsense. The scholars all boast in vain; Religion is not woven to fit everyone's feet.'
