Section 20 - A Tale and a Proverb

Original content

English translation

A clever person said to Bahlul, "I will give you a striped cloak, do you want it?" He said, "I want two hundred blows of a stick upon it." He said, "Tell me, why do you desire the stick?" He said, "Because in the house of pride (this world), Comfort is not far from the pain of the heart. For in this transient abode, No one has found comfort without suffering. In this station of deceit and pride, I do not see comfort far from the pain of the heart. The cloak of the man of asceticism is his tradition, Because the transformation of 'jubbah' (cloak) is 'junnah' (shield/paradise). What shall I do with a striped cloak? Give a cloak that brings its name. Because in the house of comfort and pain, For the sake of one's name, not out of malice, Whatever the heavens have entrusted to the creatures, Their names have all been brought to me. The secret of this hut is the tale-bearing soul, The Universal Intellect is the treasure-house of the secret. Why do you take sustenance from the hand of one, Who teaches the science of 'he who has died, dies'?"
