Section 41 - Allegory on the Love of the World and Its Deception

Original content

English translation

I bound a master by human kindness; I made a bolster for him, but he did not sit upon it. I said to him, 'This is a pleasant resting place.' He said, 'How can one who has been unraveled by fire Entrust his body to a resting place, When the grave, death, and resurrection lie ahead?' All these resting places are but grief and desire; The resting place of God's mercy is sufficient. Behold this free-spirited man who nurtures faith! Behold this firm discourse of one who purchases wisdom! O Sanai, do not drag out your speech; Brevity is better, taste the salt from the pot. Without having divorced the body, He seeks religion—behold such a free man! This world is straightway for the sake of the deceived; A ruined house and a spider's web. This world, concealed in ornaments and robes, Is an ugly old hag with a foul mouth. Do not believe in her tricks and colors; Do not listen to her embellished, absurd words. What water do you expect from her door? Why do you place a whirlpool beneath your mound? She has swept a hundred thousand like you into the water, And brought them back thirsty, without showing any concern. When you distanced yourself from this old hag, You gave a pledge of hand for the sake of the houri. How can a houri associate with you? When can a houri ever get along with an old hag? Give her three divorces if you have any intelligence, For this old hag is a husband-killer. There is no Haidar in these horizons Who would give three divorces to this old hag. Although there are many heroes in the world, In the path of religion, they do not reach his dust. How can time be pleasant to you even for a moment, Just as fire might suddenly leap from a cucumber? The sweetness of here is the poison of there; The wetness of the brain is the plague of the feet. As long as the world is yours, there shall be no houri; Know that you are extremely far from spiritual meanings. Let go of all false hopes entirely; Raise a clamor in the city like a mob. What will you do with this snake-filled rubbish heap, Where neither she, nor her dog, nor her corpse has any value? Stay far from her, for from a meager asset, A lame chick comes forth if you buy an egg. Like a cat, she gives birth to her own food; How can her offspring endure before her? Your pack-beast is a swift Arab stallion, Yet you are the buyer of lame and carcass donkeys! Adopt the majestic character of lions; Do not be low-spirited like a cat.
