از ثری تا به اوج چرخ اثیر
همه میرنده اند دون و امیر

چه حدیث است میر هم میرد
زانکه جسمست مرگ بپذیرد

چکنی سرگذشت طراری
سرگذشت اجل شنو باری

تا بگوید چگونه سازم چاه
تا بگوید چگونه سوزم شاه

تا بگوید به غافل و کر و کور
به که دادم ز که استدم زر و زور

تا بگوید که گردنان را من
چون شکستم به سروری گردن

تا بگوید چه تاختم بر تخت
تا بگوید چه باختم با بخت

بخت خود از چه سان نگون کردم
تخت این از که پر ز خون کردم

چه نخ و بیخها بکندم من
چه شخ و شاخها فکندم من

نفس این را نکال چون کردم
بدر آنرا هلال چون کردم

خسروان را چگونه کردم مست
قصر شاهان چگونه کردم پست

English translation

From the dust of the earth to the heights of the etheric sphere, all are mortal, both the lowly and the prince. What talk is this? Even the prince dies, for since he is a physical body, he must accept death. Why do you dwell on the adventures of a trickster? Listen instead to the tale of destiny (Death) for once! So it may tell how I construct the pit, so it may tell how I burn the king. So it may tell the negligent, the deaf, and the blind, to whom I gave and from whom I snatched gold and power. So it may tell how I, of the proud-necked ones, broke their necks despite their lordship. So it may tell how I raided the throne, so it may tell how I gambled with fortune. How I overturned their own fortune, and from whom I filled this throne with blood. What roots and foundations I have torn up, what rugged lands and branches I have cast down. How I turned the soul of this one into a punishment, and how I made the full moon of that one into a crescent. How I made monarchs drunk, and how I laid low the palaces of kings.
