English translation

A person does not become downcast because of the wise, Affection born of reason does not diminish. The affection of the ignorant is like a spinning bead, The affection born of reason is true affection. How is affection mixed with whim fitting? For whim is sometimes hot and sometimes cold. Because it is fickle and faithless, The affection that stems from whim is like whim itself. Do not involve yourself with whim in either good or bad, If you do get involved, flee from it quickly. But at the time of loyalty, through good and bad, Neither reason turns back, nor the affection of reason. There is a different art to love, The companionship of love has a different cause. Even where Hell unveils itself, The pious one does not abandon his friend. That soul knows there is no visible form, That friends are not as you might wish them to be. Hatred that stems from tradition (Sunnah) is religion, Affection that stems from an ulterior motive is enmity. 'You' and 'I' divided mankind into two, Without 'me' and 'you', you would be me and I would be you. 'You are you, I am me' is the source of deceit, 'You are this way, I am that way' is the source of war. With self-centeredness, we both become demon-like, Without 'me' and 'you', you and I will be joyous. We will be joyous in this ancient garden, When 'you' departs from you and 'I' departs from me. 'You' and 'I' is misguidance, avoid it, Do not foolishly cling to 'me' and 'you'. As long as you belong to yourself, you cannot be a friend, Know that in friendship, both good and ugly are shared. At times of greed and need, an enemy from a friend, You can only distinguish through profit and loss. Friends, in times of profit and loss, Can be seen and put to the test.
