Section 17 - He Speaks on Lust and Greed

Original content

English translation

What are the world, its people, and their seeking of support? A dustbin full of dogs and carcasses.

For the sake of a single silent one, all this clamor; For the sake of a single heap of dust, all this wind.

The affection of time is mingled with malice; It has garlic hidden inside the almond sweetmeat.

In pursuit of a grain of wheat in this world, How long will you remain naked like Adam?

Do not torment your soul for the sake of wheat, For Adam was disgraced for a single grain of wheat.

Look into the world in pursuit of its secret; What will you do with its deceitful color and scent?

This world is an outward display of that world, But that one is alive, while this one is a carcass.

Consider it a sea: that one is superior in honor; Its end is a casket of pearls, and its beginning is foam.

Consider it a ruined house, turned upside down; The murals on the wall full of trees and shields.

Neither does its tree bear fruit, Nor does its shield ward off death.

The secret of the heart has revealed both to you; You, in negligence, have not heard either.

Remaining in its deception night and day, Like children with walnuts on a Friday.

The nature of life and death, wealth and existence, Under the revolving of time, do you know what it is?

A foolish beloved and an intelligent rival, Sweet wine and a sour host.

A host without safeguard and without shame, All the food is cold and its water is warm.

So do not pour, if you want your pot to be greasy, Water into the pot and oil into the sand.

The secret of this hut is the deceitful nafs (lower self); The Universal Intellect is the falcon of the house of secrets.

Do not gather its provision, even if it has provision, For running after it brings regret and death.

Hover around the door of the intellect so that you may be saved, From afflictions, ugliness, and corruption.

Intellect is the best minister for a man; Otherwise, he will remain deluded like the foolish.
