Section 14 - Mention of the Meaning and Proof of Love

Original content

English translation

The claim of love and intellect is mere speech; The reality of intellect and love is action. Selflessness is the defining attribute of love; The heart's blood is the reward of love. To whomever love reveals its face, It steals away their heart and soul entirely. No one emerges victorious over love; Love is the mythical Anqa of the West today. You cannot define what love is; Why do you wander at the door of being a lover? Being a lover is the work of lion-hearted men; It is not by claim, but rather by proof. For him whose head is better than his hat, Upon his head, the hat is but a sin. For he who is the candle of the path in love, Has a fiery hat like a candle. You are a child; go, cover your eyes from the demon; You are an infant on the path; go, silence yourself. Learn to know your left hand from your right hand, So that you do not count mere imitation as faith. The love of true men is on the path of supplication; Your love is directed towards bread and onions. On the path of needlessness, O dervish, Go like a stranger in pursuit of yourself. Seek effort from the body, and attraction from the soul; Know boiling from love, and tasting from faith. For your felicity-seeking soul, There are eight tables (Paradises), and seven stages are before you. Love will demand that the living die like a candle, With eyes and heart blind, and complexion pale. Wherever there is beauty and charm, There is a wink accompanied by playfulness and joy. You are in such a state of love, nature, and temperament, That you weigh nothing in the eyes of the wise. How could you ever appear worthy to the people of intellect, When you sell hypocrisy, and the base self buys? As long as you sell him this merchandise, He gives you a new robe of honor at every breath. His merchandise is with you for but an hour; His robe of honor is a snare, pain, a fetter, and a cage. If you escape from this snare and his bonds, You will take off your shoes and lay down your hat.
