Section 63 - On Prayer and Aspiration

Original content

English translation

Prepare the mount's gear and saddle For the sake of the high court of Heaven. Join your repentance to God with prayer So that God's acceptance may receive you. From time to time you come for the obligatory prayer, Separated from reality, coupled with the metaphorical (illusion). Without prayer, supplication, and weeping, You perform one or two rak'ahs in negligence. You suppose that this is prayer; By God, they will not grant you any passage for this. If it is free of you (your ego), the Pure One will accept it; Since it became polluted by you, He will not receive it. A letter that comes from the tongue of pain, That messenger departs from the world of mortal men. When the messenger is sent from the court of need, From you comes 'O Lord' and from Him comes 'Labbayk' (Here I am). Not a youth whose words defile, But a youth who brings peace to the soul. Uttered in the path of our prayer, A hundred thousand helpers singing voices. Why should the path be sought from this one and that one? Your pain is the guide to your destination. You go to God with vanity, Dragging the robes of grandeur under your feet, Like a master who struts along, And goes before his servant and slave. You lay a burden of obligation upon Him, saying: 'I am the lover of the High Glory.' You consider yourself a friend, not a servant; Is this the custom of a wise man? Such worship, O son, it is better That you do not bring before Him, as it is ugly and ruined. Without guidance, man is less than a wild beast; Whoever is without guidance is futile. Repent of this worship of yours, O foolish one! Do not call yourself a servant anymore. If you had any power in the world, You would not be less than Pharaoh in action. For he, out of extreme confusion, And from the height of pride and ignorance, Since he had no head for servitude and helplessness, Lifted the veil from his true state. He said, 'I am supreme over all gods; In the world, I am of the high-minded.' Everyone has this pride and arrogance; The word 'Pharaoh' exists for this human nature. But out of fear, one does not dare speak it, And keeps that secret hidden within.
