Section 32 - On the Commitment of Religious Scholars

Original content

English translation

Scholars are none but the trustees of religion, When they do not find safety, they are not trustees. The eye of the head is the state, and the eye of the secret is religion, That one is world-seeing, and this one is hidden-seeing. This and that are both companions to one another, They are both the autumn and the spring to one another. For state and religion, a head that is without intellect, Is exactly like the condition of a moth and felt. The barrier of the wise came from the foundation, The barrier of the state came from rectitude and justice. For state and religion in this world and in that, Truthfulness and justice are the face and support. When rectitude is not the companion of the king, Consider his kingdom as wind, do not rely on his kingdom. Wherever the truth of religion and the heart is alive, Wherever there is justice, the kingdom is enduring. When the king becomes paired with justice and rectitude [he prospers], Otherwise, his kingdom will be like the kingdom of 'Ad. Did not the True to the Promise say, 'Follow those who are after me'? When with truthfulness and justice, both together, They tied the knot, the work became firm. Both became singular for the sake of profit, Without harm, following became correct. Has it not remained alive eternally, The oppression of Marwan and the justice of Nushirvan? You will bring the kingdom of both worlds under your feet, If you let go of desire from your hand. Whoever is pious and content, As long as the two worlds exist, he is a lord. When intellect becomes the crown and piety becomes the throne, Gabriel will call you Emperor.
