مبر این زندگی به صدر سعیر
هم بدینجاش واگذار و بمیر

زنده آنجایگه مبر تن خویش
آب حیوان مده به دشمن خویش

حرب قائم شده میان دو تن
چه دهی تیغ خویش زی دشمن

که چو چشم اجل فراز کند
پس از آن عقل چشم باز کند

تا ببینی نهان عالم را
تا ببینی جهان آدم را

تا ببینی یکی به چشم عیان
چیزها را چنانکه هست چنان

تو هنوز از جهان چه دیدستی
زین جهان نام او شنیدستی

غافلی از جهان و از کارش
نازموده به فعل کردارش

تو چو داماد و عقبی است عروس
سوی دنیی نگه مکن به فسوس

ترسم این غفلت از همه مقصود
باز دارد ترا گه موعود

پیش سلطان به پاسبان منگر
نظر شاه مر ترا بهتر

English translation

Do not carry this life to the depths of the blazing fire; leave it right here and die. Do not bring your living body to that place; do not give the water of life to your enemy. A war is waged between two; why do you hand your sword to the enemy? For when the eye of death closes, only then will the intellect open its eyes, So that you may see the secrets of the universe, so that you may see the world of Adam, So that you may see with your own eyes, all things as they truly are. What have you yet seen of the world? You have only heard its name from this world. You are heedless of the world and its workings, inexperienced in its actions and deeds. You are like a groom, and the hereafter is the bride; do not gaze upon this world with regretful longing. I fear this heedlessness will keep you from your ultimate goal at the promised hour. In the presence of the Sultan, do not look at the watchman; the gaze of the King is far better for you.
