Section 42 - On the Description of the Nafs and Its States

Original content

English translation

The nafs (lower soul) is the thief of the house, see it now, Guard the house of the heart and religion from it. The sudden external thief steals the worthless, The thief of the house steals the precious. When the foreign thief gains victory, He takes nothing but the trifles of the house. But when the thief of the house looks inside, He carries off all the most valuable goods. You are happy because the fabric is before you, You have no news of the others, just wait! Until you stretch your hand toward the treasury, You will not see again what you need the most. Within you, a leopard and a mouse are together, And you keep sleeping—what ignorance and wrong! Oblivious to the deceit and trickery of Satan, Satan has aimed for your soul out of cunning.
