Section 12 - On the Illumination of Love

Original content

English translation

I have read thus, that in Baghdad, There was a man who lost his heart. In the path of love, the man became sincere, Suddenly he fell in love with a woman. His district was Nahr al-Mu'alla, The woman was from Karkh; the water of the Tigris was the barrier. Every night, this man, from the fire in his heart, Would swiftly take the path to the Tigris. He would cross and go to the woman's house, Having become oblivious to his own soul and body. The wine of love had made him intoxicated, And with audacity, he took to swimming. When some time had passed in this manner, The fire of love slightly diminished. He noticed himself in the midst of it all, And began to circle around 'how and why'. There was a mole on those moon-like cheeks; When the man looked at the woman's mole, He asked, 'What is this mole, O moon-faced one? Tell me the story of your mole.' The woman replied to him, 'Tonight, do not enter the water, Beware, save your own life! The mole on my face is from birth, But the fire of your love has lost its sparks. Since you noticed the mole on my cheek, You have become preoccupied with this auspicious beauty of mine.' The man did not listen and went into the Tigris; Through recklessness, he spilled his own blood. He drowned and surrendered his soul in the water; His soul and body were ruined in the water. As long as the man remained in a state of intoxication, The path of safety lay in his thankfulness. When he awoke from the drunkenness of love, He risked his precious soul in the endeavor. As long as a man holds the spark of love in his heart, He does not notice the produce of clay. When the spark diminishes, he becomes aware, And then he faces danger from his own intellect. And whoever merely claims to be on the path of love, His lion is lesser than the fox of love. He remains bound in idle chatter, Driven away from the door of meaning and true awareness. His state is like that of the young man, Who is put to shame before women. Have you not heard what that dear woman said, When the man could no longer conceal his true state from her?
