آن شنیدی که بود پنبه زنی
مفلس و قلتبانش خواند زنی

گفتش ای زن مرا به نادانی
مفلس و قلتبان چرا خوانی

چه بود جرم من چو باشم من
مفلس از چرخ و قلتبان از زن

زیرکی را که دل نخواهد رنج
عافیت کنج به قناعت گنج

هرکه این کنج و گنج بگذارد
کس از او او ز کس نیازارد

زانکه در دهر سگ پرستانند
راست چون موش آفت نانند

صدهزاران فتوح در یکدم
به بر آید ز آدم و عالم

بی دل و دین ازین خداوندی
به خدای ار تو هیچ بربندی

دور شو زین جهان که آن تو نیست
چه بوی آن او که آن تو نیست

بی تو ایام کارها کردست
چون تو بسیار کس رها کردست

پیش از این بس که بود چرخ کبود
زین سپس بس که نیز خواهد بود

بر وفای زمانه کیسه مدوز
بگذرانش به قوت روز به روز

بر براق خرد نشین پیوست
دور باش از هوای گاوپرست

چه کنی خویش خویشت اللٰه بس
هرچه زو بگذری هوا و هوس

صدق به صدق مخرقه یله کن
ساز کشتی به بحر در خله کن

ذره ای صدق به که اندر راه
بجز از صدق نیست هیچ پناه

آهو از صدق اگر شود آگاه
شیر گیرد به کمترین روباه

به اقلی بسنده کن در راه
چند از این باقلی کرمک خواه

قوم موسی چو از براق خرد
دور ماندند درگذرگه بد

از سمند هدی گسسته چو چنگ
رخت ادبار بسته بر خر لنگ

از نهاد نهال صد ساله
بیخ بر داد شاخ گوساله

از هوا این چنین بسی بینی
مگسی را چو کرگسی بینی

خرمگس کم حیات بسیار آز
کرگس اندک نیاز افزون ناز

مگسی با حدث قناعت کرد
کرگس اندر هوا شجاعت کرد

زان قناعت بضاعت و خواریست
زین شجاعت شناعت و زاریست

کارت آن به کز آن رهد عاقل
انست آن به کز آن رمد جاهل

سینه را همچو چرک ساز حصار
زان سپس باش گو جهان پر مار

سینه را هرکه حصن خود سازد
ملک هفت آسمان بدو نازد

عمر بر مرد غمر چه فروشی
در هوا و هوس چرا کوشی

با دو چشم پر آب رخ به دل آر
خندهٔ بیهده به گل بگذار

که بهین مایه از ره جد و جد
سنت احمدست و فرض احد

طاعت ایزدی بضاعت را
سنت احمدی شفاعت را

فرض اللٰه چون به جای آری
عرش را سر به زیر پای آری

سنت مصطفی چو بگزاری
کافر و گبر را نیازاری

خوی خود را بدین دو نیکو کن
سنت این و خدمت او کن

English translation

Have you heard that there was a cotton carder Whom a woman called bankrupt and a cuckold? He said to her, 'O woman, in your ignorance, Why do you call me bankrupt and a cuckold? What is my crime if I am Bankrupt by the heavens, and a cuckold by the woman?' For the wise one whose heart does not wish to suffer, Well-being is a corner, and contentment is a treasure. Whoever leaves this corner and this treasure, No one will harm him, and he will harm no one. For in this world, there are dog-worshippers, Exactly like mice, they are the plague of bread. A hundred thousand victories in a single moment Will come forth from man and the universe. Without heart and faith from this lordship, By God, if you bind yourself to any of this. Turn away from this world, for it is not yours; Why should you belong to it when it is not yours? Without you, time has accomplished many deeds, And it has abandoned many like you. Before this, how long the blue dome of heaven existed, And after this, how long it will also exist! Do not sew a purse on the loyalty of fortune, Pass it by with daily sustenance from day to day. Ride always upon the Buraq of intellect, Keep away from the desires of the cow-worshipper. Why do you seek relatives? Allah is sufficient for you, Whatever you cross beyond Him is but desire and passion. With sincerity, abandon the deceitful cloak with sincerity, Prepare the ship and launch it into the sea. An atom of sincerity is better on the path, For there is no refuge other than sincerity. If a deer becomes aware of sincerity, It will capture a lion with the smallest fox. Be content with the minimum on the path, How long will you seek this worm-eaten bean? When the people of Moses, from the Buraq of intellect, Remained far in the evil passage, Severed from the steed of guidance like a harp, They packed the baggage of adversity on a lame donkey. From the planting of a hundred-year-old sapling, The root gave rise to the branch of a calf. From passion, you will see many such things, You will see a fly as a vulture. The blowfly has a short life and much greed, The vulture has little need and great pride. A fly was content with filth, The vulture showed courage in the air. From that contentment comes humiliation and misery; From this courage comes ignominy and lamentation. Your work is best if the wise person is saved by it, Your intimacy is best if the ignorant flees from it. Make the breast like a shield a fortress, Thenceforth, let the world be full of snakes. Whoever makes his breast his fortress, The kingdom of the seven heavens boasts of him. Why do you sell your life to a foolish man? Why do you strive in passion and desire? With two eyes full of tears, turn your face to the heart, Leave vain laughter to the mud. For the best asset from the path of effort and diligence Is the Sunnah of Ahmad and the obligation of the One. Obedience to God is for the capital, The Sunnah of Ahmad is for intercession. When you fulfill the obligation of Allah, You place the Throne beneath your feet. When you practice the Sunnah of Mustafa, You do not harm the infidel or the fire-worshipper. Make your character good with these two: Observe the Sunnah of this one, and serve that one.
