Section 8 - The Allegory on Diligent Effort

Original content

English translation

The son of Khattab, that unique man of virtue, Ka'b al-Ahbar narrated from him. He said: 'Were it not for three characteristics, My life would have been a trial and a burden. I would have chosen death for myself; This life would hold no value or foliage for me. But for the sake of these three virtues, I find life and this respite acceptable.' Ka'b says: 'I said to him, O Emir, Tell me these three virtues and do not withhold them.' He said: 'First, that from time to time, On every path in the way of God, We run and seek jihad (striving), And we joyfully march on the path of battle. Second is that, for the sake of obedience, We bow our heads in prostration every hour, Calling upon God at all times, And acknowledging Him as the one true Deity. Third, that this eager assembly Who sit as companions free from hypocrisy and discord, Hear the word of truth from us, Gathering it like hungry birds picking seeds, Or like sand parched by the intense heat of the sun That finds water and drinks to its satisfaction. For the sake of these three virtues, my heart is glad, Stepping on water with feet in fire. For the sake of the creation of God, I have consented to life, Doing so for the pleasure of the Creator. Were it not for these three states, This life of mine would be filled with weariness.'
