بخش ۵۳ - قصهٔ قیس‌بن عاصم رضی‌الله عنه / Section 53 - The Story of Qays ibn Asim, May God Be Pleased with Him

آن زمان کز خدای نزد رسول
حکم من ذاالذی نمود نزول

هرکسی آنقدر که دست رسید
پیش مهتر کشید و سر نکشید

گوهر و زر ستور و بنده و مال
هرچه در وسع بودشان در حال

قیس عاصم ضعیف حالی بود
که نکردی طلب ز دنیا سود

رفت در خانه با عیال بگفت
زانچه بشنید هیچیک ننهفت

کاینچنین آیت آمده است امروز
خیز و ما را در انتظار مسوز

آنچه در خانه حاضر است بیار
تا کنم پیش سید آن ایثار

گفت زن چیز نیست در خانه
تو نه ای زین سرای بیگانه

گفتش آخر بجوی آن مقدار
هرچه یابی سبک به نزد من آر

رفت و خانه بجست بسیاری
تا برآید مگر ورا کاری

یافت در خانه صاعی از خرما
دقل و خشک گشته تا بنوا

پیش قیس آورید زن در حال
گفت زین بیش نیست مارا مال

قیس خرما به آستین در کرد
شادمانه بر رسول آورد

چون درون رفت قیس در مسجد
نز سر هزل بلکه از سر جد

گفت با وی منافقی بدکار
تا چه آورده ای سبک پیش آر

گوهر است این متاع یا زر و سیم
پیش مهتر چه می کنی تسلیم

زان سخن قیس گشت خوار و خجل
بنگر تا چه آمدش حاصل

رفت و در گوشه ای به غم بنشست
بر نهاده ز شرم دست به دست

آمد از سدره جبرئیل امین
گفت کای سید زمان و زمین

مرد را اندر انتظار مدار
وآنچه آورده است خوار مدار

مصطفی را ز حال کرد آگاه
یلمزون المطوعین ناگاه

مرد را انتظار چون دارند
ملکوت آمده به نظارند

زلزله اوفتاده در ملکوت
نیست جای قرار و جای سکوت

حق تعالی چنین همی گوید
دل او را به لطف می جوید

کای سرافراز، وی گزیده رسول
اینقدر زود کن ز قیس قبول

که به نزد من این دقل بعیان
بهتر از زر و گوهر دگران

زو پذیرفتم این متاع قلیل
زانکه دستش رسید نیست بخیل

از همه چیزهای بگزیده
هست جهدالمقل پسندیده

قیس را زان سبب برآمد کار
زان منافق به فعل بد گفتار

گشت رسوا منافق اندر حال
قیس را کار گشت از آن به کمال

تا بدانی که هرکه پیش آمد
هم برآنسان که بود بیش آمد

با خدای آنکه تو دو دل باشد
از همه فعل خود خجل باشد

راستی بهتر از همه کاری
خوانده باشی تو اینقدر باری

English translation

At that time when from God to the Messenger, The decree of 'Who is it that...' descended, Everyone, as much as their hand could reach, Brought before the leader and did not hold back. Jewels, gold, mounts, slaves, and wealth, Whatever was in their capacity, they brought immediately. Qays ibn Asim was in a needy state, Who sought no profit from the world. He went home and spoke to his wife, Concealing nothing of what he had heard. He said: 'Such a verse has descended today, Arise, and do not keep us in waiting. Bring whatever is present in the house, So that I may sacrifice it before the Master.' The wife said: 'There is nothing in the house, You are not a stranger to this home.' He said: 'Seek at least some amount, Whatever you find, bring it to me quickly.' She went and searched the house thoroughly, So that perhaps her search would bear fruit. She found a sa' (measure) of dates in the house, Dry and of low quality to the core. The wife brought it to Qays immediately, Saying: 'We have no wealth beyond this.' Qays put the dates into his sleeve, And joyfully brought them to the Messenger. When Qays entered the mosque, Not in jest, but in all seriousness, An evil-doing hypocrite said to him: 'Let's see what you have brought, bring it forward quickly. Are these goods jewels, or gold and silver, That you submit before the leader?' From those words, Qays felt humbled and ashamed; See what outcome he received. He went and sat in a corner in grief, Placing hand in hand out of shame. Gabriel the trustworthy came from the Lote-tree, And said: 'O master of time and earth, Do not keep the man in waiting, And do not hold what he has brought in contempt.' He made Mustafa aware of the situation, And suddenly [revealed the verse] 'those who defame the voluntary contributors'. Why do they keep the man waiting? The kingdom of heaven has come to watch. An earthquake has fallen upon the celestial realm, There is no place for rest and silence. God Almighty speaks thus, Seeking his heart with kindness: 'O exalted one, O chosen Messenger, Accept this small amount from Qays quickly, For in My sight, these poor dates clearly Are better than the gold and jewels of others. I accepted this small possession from him, Because it was all he could afford, and he is not miserly. Of all chosen things, The effort of the needy (juhd al-muqill) is preferred.' For that reason, Qays's affair succeeded, And that hypocrite of evil deeds and speech Was immediately disgraced, While Qays's work was perfected. So that you may know that whoever came forward, Prospered just as he was. The one who is double-minded with God Will be ashamed of all his actions. Truthfulness is better than any deed; You must have read at least this much.
