Section 8 - The Story of the Woman Seeking Justice with Sultan Mahmud
Text and Translation
| Have you heard what happened, as was fitting, What that woman did with the past prince? | |
| The king of kings, the Right Hand of the Religion, Mahmud, Through whom generosity and liberality became alive, | |
| To whom that woman gave a harsh answer, Such that he bit his finger because of her. | |
| An agent in Nisa and Baward Made an attempt on that woman's property and belongings. | |
| He seized the woman's house by force; When he took it, he left her in the clothes of a desert Arab. | |
| The woman, out of hardship, took the path to Ghaznin; Listen to this story and behold the wonders. | |
| She made her petition known to the Sultan, Bringing God as her intercessor, | |
| Saying: 'The agent of Nisa took my properties, And I am perishing from this suffering.' | |
| When the king heard the old woman's condition, And saw the old woman weak and helpless, | |
| He said: 'Give her a letter, if there is one, So that he stays his hand from the woman's properties.' | |
| The woman quickly took the letter and brought it Joyfully to the agent of Baward, | |
| Ordering him to return all the property to the woman And to grant passage to the helpless woman. | |
| The wretched agent thought to himself: 'I will make the judgment on this woman like the judgment of Sodom. | |
| The woman will not travel the road to Ghaznin again; I will not submit to her.' | |
| He returned not even a grain of dust to the woman, Nor did he have any anxiety or fear of the king or God. | |
| The woman once again decided to go to Ghaznin; Look what a difficult game she brought about. | |
| She presented her story to the king once more, Seeking a wise opinion and judgment from the king. | |
| In seeking justice against the agent of Baward, She cried out and raised a lament. | |
| The Sultan said: 'Give her another letter; Do not establish bad customs and practices anymore.' | |
| The woman said: 'I carried the letter once, But he did not act upon the letter.' | |
| The Sultan was busy at that moment; He did not accept the old woman's words. | |
| The Sultan said: 'My duty is only To give a letter so that it is issued. | |
| If he did not act upon that letter, That governor who is in Baward, | |
| Cry out bitterly and throw dust on your head In front of us, and speak no more of this endless matter.' | |
| Quickly and calmly she said: 'O Sultan, Since they did not obey your command, | |
| It is not I who should throw dust on my head; Throwing dust is not fitting for me. | |
| Dust on the head should be thrown by someone Whose command is not sovereign over the age!' | |
| The Sultan heard this speech from the woman, And immediately regretted what he had said. | |
| He said: 'O old woman, I spoke in error, For I was disturbed by your speech. | |
| Indeed, dust on the head is fitting for me, Not for you, for whom this is appropriate, | |
| For how can I have such a vast kingdom, Yet my command is not obeyed within that realm?' | |
| He then quickly ordered Ayaz, Saying: 'Further talk is of no use. | |
| Choose quickly one of the servants To ride to Nisa like the morning breeze, | |
| Who shall have twenty horsemen with him, To see who this foolish governor is, | |
| To deal harshly with the evil man, And then hang him from a tree, | |
| To hang the letter around his neck, So that everyone may abstain from evil. | |
| And then proclaim loudly within the city: 'Whoever went outside the king's command, | |
| Rebelled and became lost and disobedient, And wandered around self-will and sins, | |
| This is inevitably his punishment, Lest he should hold the sultan's pleasure in contempt.'' | |
| A commander departed for this task immediately, And killed the corrupt man with exemplary punishment. | |
| The foolish agent, due to such conduct, Lost his life in vain in this affair. | |
| Thereafter, the king's command became effective; The lion drank water with the wild ass in the plain. | |
| When the king's command is sovereign, The world becomes like paradise from his justice. | |
| Therefore, if his command is not decisive, No one will resolve to enter his kingdom. | |
| The sultan's command is like God's command; That is why he is called the Shadow of God. | |
| The words of the Prophet, spoken of the king, are: 'The Sultan is always the Shadow of God.' | |
