O Ziya al-Haqq (Light of Truth) Husam al-Din, come! O polisher of the spirit and king of guidance! Give the Masnavi a spacious exposition; give spirit to the form of its parables, So that its letters may all become intellect and soul, and fly towards the paradise of the spirit. By your effort they came from the spirits, towards the snare of letters and became confined. May your life in the world be like Khizr, soul-enhancing, helping, and continuous! May you remain in the world like Khizr and Ilyas, so that the earth may become heaven by your grace! I would have told a fraction of a hundred of your grace, if there had not been the danger of the evil eye. But from the evil eye, with its poisonous breath, I have suffered soul-consuming wounds. Except through symbols in mentioning the state of others, I cannot bring the explanation of your state into expression. This excuse is also from the deceit of a heart by which the feet of the heart are stuck in clay. A hundred hearts and souls have become lovers of the Creator, but an evil eye or an evil ear has become a barrier. For example, Abu Talib, the uncle of the Prophet, to whom the reproach of the Arabs seemed terrible, Thinking, 'What will the Arabs say of me, that for his own child he abandoned the trusted religion?' He (the Prophet) said to him, 'O uncle, you pronounce one declaration of faith, so that I may dispute with God for your sake.' He said, 'But it will be revealed through hearing; every secret that passes beyond two is spread abroad. I will remain on the tongues of these Arabs, and become despised before them for this reason.' But if there had been for him preceding divine grace, how could this cowardice exist with the attraction of Truth? Help, O You who are the helper of those who cry for help, from these two branches of wicked free-will (choice)! From the deceit and cunning of the heart I am so checkmated that I am left unable to lament. Who am I? The sphere (of heaven), with a hundred tasks and burdens, cried out from this ambush of free-will, Saying, 'O Lord, Generous and Clement, give me security from these two branches of free-will! The one-way attraction of the Straight Path is better than the two ways of hesitation, O Generous One! Though You are the destination in both these ways, yet this duality is an agonizing death.' Though in these two ways there is no aim but You, yet battle is never like a feast. Hear its explanation in the Quran from God, the verse, 'they shrank from bearing it.' This hesitation in the heart is like a battle: 'Would this state be better for me, or that?' In hesitation, they strike against each other, fear and the hope of betterment in advance and retreat.
