دفتر ششم - بخش ۱۱۷ - بیان مجاهد کی دست از مجاهده باز ندارد اگر چه داند بسطت عطاء حق را کی آن مقصود از طرف دیگر و به سبب نوع عمل دیگر بدو رساند کی در وهم او نبوده باشد او همه وهم و اومید درین طریق معین بسته باشد حلقهٔ همین در می‌زند بوک حق تعالی آن روزی را از در دیگر بدو رساند کی او آن تدبیر نکرده باشد و یرزقه من حیث لا یحتسب العبد یدبر والله یقدر و بود کی بنده را وهم بندگی بود کی مرا از غیر این در برساند اگر چه من حلقهٔ این در می‌زنم حق تعالی او را هم ازین در روزی رساند فی‌الجمله این همه درهای یکی سرایست مع تقریره / Book Six - Section 117 - The explanation that the spiritual striver does not withhold his hand from striving, even if he knows the vastness of God's bestowal, which might deliver that desired object to him from another direction and by means of a different kind of action that was not in his imagination. He has attached all his imagination and hope to this specific path, knocking at this very door, in the hope that God the Exalted might deliver that provision from another door which he has not contrived, 'And He provides for him from where he does not expect' (Qur'an 65:3). The servant contrives and God ordains. And it might be that the servant has the illusion of servanthood, thinking, 'He will bring it to me from other than this door, even though I am knocking at this door,' yet God the Exalted delivers his provision to him from this very door. In short, all these doors are of one palace, along with its exposition.

یا درین ره آیدم آن کام من
یا چو باز آیم ز ره سوی وطن

بوک موقوفست کامم بر سفر
چون سفر کردم بیابم در حضر

یار را چندین بجویم جد و چست
که بدانم که نمی بایست جست

آن معیت کی رود در گوش من
تا نگردم گرد دوران زمن

کی کنم من از معیت فهم راز
جز که از بعد سفرهای دراز

حق معیت گفت و دل را مهر کرد
تا که عکس آید به گوش دل نه طرد

چون سفرها کرد و داد راه داد
بعد از آن مهر از دل او بر گشاد

چون خطایین آن حساب با صفا
گرددش روشن ز بعد دو خطا

بعد از آن گوید اگر دانستمی
این معیت را کی او را جستمی

دانش آن بود موقوف سفر
ناید آن دانش به تیزی فکر

آنچنان که وجه وام شیخ بود
بسته و موقوف گریهٔ آن وجود

کودک حلواییی بگریست زار
توخته شد وام آن شیخ کبار

گفته شد آن داستان معنوی
پیش ازین اندر خلال مثنوی

در دلت خوف افکند از موضعی
تا نباشد غیر آنت مطمعی

در طمع فایدهٔ دیگر نهد
وآن مرادت از کسی دیگر دهد

ای طمع در بسته در یک جای سخت
که آیدم میوه از آن عالی درخت

آن طمع زان جا نخواهد شد وفا
بل ز جای دیگر آید آن عطا

آن طمع را پس چرا در تو نهاد
چون نخواستت زان طرف آن چیز داد

از برای حکمتی و صنعتی
نیز تا باشد دلت در حیرتی

تا دلت حیران بود ای مستفید
که مرادم از کجا خواهد رسد

تا بدانی عجز خویش و جهل خویش
تا شود ایقان تو در غیب بیش

هم دلت حیران بود در منتجع
که چه رویاند مصرف زین طمع

طمع داری روزیی در درزیی
تا ز خیاطی بی زر تا زیی

رزق تو در زرگری آرد پدید
که ز وهمت بود آن مکسب بعید

پس طمع در درزیی بهر چه بود
چون نخواست آن رزق زان جانب گشود

بهر نادر حکمتی در علم حق
که نبشت آن حکم را در ما سبق

نیز تا حیران بود اندیشه ات
تا که حیرانی بود کل پیشه ات

یا وصال یار زین سعیم رسد
یا ز راهی خارج از سعی جسد

من نگویم زین طریق آید مراد
می طپم تا از کجا خواهد گشاد

سربریده مرغ هر سو می فتد
تا کدامین سو رهد جان از جسد

یا مراد من برآید زین خروج
یا ز برجی دیگر از ذات البروج

English translation

Either my desire will be fulfilled on this path, Or when I return from the road to my homeland. Perhaps my desire is contingent upon traveling; When I have traveled, I may find it at home. I will seek the Friend so earnestly and nimbly, So that I may know that He did not need to be sought. How can that 'Withness' (God being with us) enter my ear, Until I have wandered the cycles of time? How can I understand the secret of 'Withness' Except after long journeys? God spoke of 'Withness' and sealed the heart, So that a reflection might come to the ear of the heart, not rejection. When he has made journeys and paid the dues of the road, After that, He removes the seal from his heart. Like the rule of double false position, that clear calculation Becomes clear to him after two errors. After that he says, 'If I had known This Withness, when would I have sought Him?' That knowledge was dependent upon travel; That knowledge does not come through sharpness of thought. Just as the means to pay the Sheikh's debt was Tied to and contingent upon the crying of that being. A young halva-seller wept bitterly, And the debt of that great Sheikh was paid off. That spiritual story has been told Before this, in the midst of the Masnavi. He casts fear into your heart from a certain place, So that you have no object of desire other than that. In greed, He places another benefit, And gives you your desire from someone else. O you who have firmly fixed your hope on one spot, Saying, 'Fruit will come to me from that lofty tree!' That hope will not be fulfilled from that place, Rather, that bounty will come from another place. Why then did He place that hope in you, Since He did not want to give you that thing from that direction? For the sake of a wisdom and a skillful design, And also so that your heart may be in bewilderment. So that your heart may remain bewildered, O seeker of benefit, Wondering, 'From where will my desire arrive?' So that you may know your own helplessness and your own ignorance, And so that your certainty regarding the Unseen may increase. Also your heart is bewildered in the place of seeking benefit, As to what the Disposer will make grow from this hope. You have hope for provision in tailoring, So that by tailoring you may thrive without gold. He makes your provision appear in goldsmithing, For that trade was far from your imagination. What then was the purpose of hoping in tailoring, Since He did not wish to open up that provision from that direction? For a rare wisdom in the knowledge of God, Who wrote that decree in eternity past. Also so that your thought may be bewildered, So that bewilderment may be your entire profession. 'Either union with the Friend will reach me from this effort of mine, Or from a path outside the effort of the body. I do not say the desire will come from this path; I flutter, wondering from where He will open the way.' A beheaded bird flops in every direction, To see in which direction the soul will escape from the body. 'Either my desire will be fulfilled from this exit, Or from another tower of the Zodiac.'
