Section 52 - A Tale

Original content

English translation

Have you heard what a companion said, Sharing a secret with a close friend of his? He said, 'Do not repeat this secret.' The other replied, 'When indeed have I heard a secret from you? It was a spark that withered away from the air; It was born from you in that moment, and died within me.' A secret must be hidden from strangers, Otherwise, if an intimate hears it, it is appropriate. A friend is an intimate for secrets and supplication; Before an intimate, a secret must be naked. To those sleeping in the path of floods and rivers, A spoken word is better than an unspoken one. Do not open a secret except before the wise; Do not show your heart except to the people of heart. Do you not see that seeds in the clay Do not show their heart to any oppressor? You are less than dust; yet dust, the maker of blessings, Keeps its secret hidden from the winter. When the spring air opens the hand of justice, The dust reveals all its secrets and its heart. A secret remains hidden within the wise, For the vigilant one is wary. Whoever spreads secrets in the light of day Has erased the alphabet from the tablet of intellect. When his heart grasped the secret of 'By the Sun,' He did not turn away like the full moon from 'By the Night.' He said, 'This burning is my curtain-maker; The night of ascension is my day of secrets.'
