Section 51 - On Keeping Secrets and Consulting

Original content

English translation

Why cover the secret, since in spring the rose Keeps no secret hidden within its heart. Consult with the good for the sake of betterment, So that through two minds you escape perplexity. For from the friend's body in the house of metaphor, The soul may depart, but the secret does not. The secret to a friend is like the soul, Thus, like the soul, it remains hidden in his heart. No wise person ever hid a secret, In sorrow and illness, from a friend and a physician. If you hide the underlying causes from the physician, You will not heal, you will remain afflicted. Tell all about the illness but tell not the secret, And what you have heard, do not recount. The secret of the heart is like the bird and the seed, The secret upon the heart is like the smoke of a house. When the bird eats the seed, it becomes nothing, And what is placed upon the heart becomes sharp. The soul of your soul will not escape these two, Unless you hide it in another place. If you tell a secret, tell it to the strong, For the strong has a quiet voice. Accept what I have said like the wise, Otherwise, draw a lesson from the elephant and the donkey. The living has entrusted the secret to none but the living, Because the secret is a dead thing to the living soul. Whoever is dead to the secrets of men, Makes a pearl, then makes his soul a shell. Until they split the shell with a knife, How can they boast of waves like the sea? You will not find the secret of kings, in particular; In vain do the cotton and the spindle sit together.
