Section 58 - On the Description of Asceticism and the Ascetic

Original content

English translation

An ascetic ran away from the people, Went to the top of a mountain and built a monastery. One day, by chance, a wise man, A knowledgeable, wise, and capable scholar, Passed by and saw the ascetic, Such a pious worshiper. He said: 'Alas! Why on this height Have you established your station, dwelling, and place?' The ascetic replied: 'The people of the world completely Perished in seeking it. Furthermore, the world has taken flight, Casting its voice in every land. In eloquent language it speaks, Seeking its prey in the world. At all times it says to the people of the world— Those wedded to affliction and separated from the Lord— Woe to the one who does not beware of me, And does not look [cautiously] when seeking me, Lest they become like in Fustat, With few birds and an abundance of hawks.'
