Section 31 - On the Description of Fools

Original content

English translation

Companionship with fools is like an empty pot, Empty on the inside, black on the outside. The friendship of fools is based on imitation, Not on the path of intellect, religion, and divine unity. Cut off the friendship of frivolous people, The friendship of people is a stone and fragile glass. A stone cannot be carried in a glass vessel, An Arab cannot be friends with a Kurd. The harp and the reed-flute describe the ignorant, Narrow-hearted and wide-mouthed. Because when a fool seeks your affection, He makes the water of accusation flow in the stream. As long as you are healthy and your decree is current, He holds you as family and friend like body and soul. When a single hair of yours changes, That one becomes Moses, this other Korah. You will see burning without light from relatives, Exactly like the lamp of dervishes. When a wise friend becomes your companion, Much of the long road becomes short. When your provisions run low on the way, He does not even glance at the corner of your hat. He is not a brother through soft and harsh times, He is only a supporter for the sake of the belly. Your heart is with God and with people, O donkey, Like a barleycorn, O you who are worth less than half a barleycorn. Because one grain is for the sake of gold, The load of a whole house is for the donkey. Renounce the donkishness of donkeys, Make your heart one with the One God. So that He may make your heart a mine of neediness, And open the door of the heart before your soul. Does not the heaven say to you from above: "Make a ladder of intellect and ascend"? But you do not listen, for you have become deaf, You abandoned intellect once you became a donkey. If your ear of intellect were open, You would hear the voice like the wise. Words have no effect on you because, You have no bearer of glad tidings from that world. In the world of God, rise from the dust, What are you doing in a hollow hut? The form of the world is like a book, In which are both fetters and advice. Its form is a fetter on the body of the base, Its attribute is advice in the heart of the wise. Its form is silent, yet speech is within it, Its body is new, and the ancient soul is within it.
