Section 18 - On the Description of the Nurturing of the Heart, He Speaks

Original content

English translation

Only the exhilarating wine of submission Can make the heart strong against trouble and fear. You become safe from affliction and burning When you drink a draught of pure wine. Until you drink the wine of religion, you remain drunk (in ignorance), But when you drink it, you are delivered from every affliction. And that exhilarating draught which the saints prepare, They prepare in the hospital of contentment. Food here is clay, turn away from it, For whoever eats clay, his face turns pale. As long as you do not abstain from clay here, How will you rise from the clay with a rosy face? When the clay-eating man is reminded, Ultimately he will give his life to the wind. The bread and white garments of this abode Increase nothing but the blackness of the heart. Your soft garments make the heart hard, Delicious food removes the shame from your head. Do not be deceived by the goodness of the skin, For the man wearing rags is the one with good character. Unpleasantness is not good, elegant, or beautiful, Good character is not found with crowns and silk brocade. The sensory soul is suited for eating, The food of the spirit is from a table without bread. The heedless are fat from insolence because They know little of the sorrow of the soul and care only for clothes. Every heart in which sorrow (of this world) resides Is not a heart, it is but a house of blood. He is not a man who revolves around himself; A true man seeks the path of his own salvation. How long? Come out from the corner of the house, From such a house towards the open plain. I am the slave of the chosen men, May my soul always be a sacrifice for them.
