Section 55 - On Union, He Speaks

Original content

English translation

How long will you ask, 'What is spiritual attainment?' And 'What is being chosen on the path of religion?' As long as you bite, you are not among the chosen; As long as you tear, you are not among the attained. Bind yourself, and you shall be chosen; Step on your head (humble yourself), and you shall attain. When was a human ever a biting creature like you? When was a demon or wild beast a tearing creature like you? You are heedless, proud all year and month; You are a beast and a demon, far from being human. Year and month seeking vengeance like a leopard, The people of the world distressed by your nature. On the highway of 'no-one' (selflessness), You will find yourself, but you will not reach Him. The Kufan made a sign out of the Sufi; The love and opinion of the Qurayshite and the Kufan. The Sufi and love, yet still in discussion Of negation and affirmation, and 'impermissible' and 'permissible.' The Sufis have raised their hands, Having exchanged 'yes' (the primordial covenant) for 'tribulation.' Dust-scatterers of the chamber of His intimacy, Dwellers on the path of His holy chamber. All of them, knowers of the curtain of jealousy, Drowned from head to foot in tears. All of them have become worthy of clemency, All of them have become prisoners of knowledge. Cast yourself down from your own neck, So that you may become beloved in every lane. Religion will emerge if you lay down sin; The head will appear if you lay down the hat of pride. A pure eye sees pure religion; When the eye becomes pure, it sees in this way. His proud ones are humble as dust, His crown-wearers are truly crowned. Cast off this seven-colored dervish cloak from your head; Keep your garment single-colored, like Jesus, So that, like Jesus, you may walk upon water, And make companions of the sun and the moon. Reduce all of your 'self' from yourself, And only then speak of the state of Adam. As long as the lower self (nafs) is with you even by a speck, You will not reach that place in any way. That atmosphere does not suit the lower self at all; Rise and prepare for the path without the self.
