کاملی بگذشت در آتش گهی
چون بدید آتش زهش شد ناگهی

چون به هوش آمد رفیقی بر رسید
کز چه مرغ عقلت از بر برپرید

گفت چون آتش بدیدم آن زمان
برگشاد از حال خود آتش زفان

گفت هان تا در من از دون همتی
ننگری از دیدهٔ بیحرمتی

زآنکه چندانیم تاب وسوز هست
وآنگهی این هر شب و هر روز هست

ز تف و سوزی که من هستم درآن
می نپردازم بدین مشتی خران

هرکه او درعشق چون آتش نشد
عیش او درعشق هرگز خوش نشد

گرم باید مرد عاشق در هلاک
محو باید گشت در معشوق پاک

در ره معشوق خود شو بی نشان
تا همه معشوق باشی جاودان

English translation

A perfect one passed by a place of fire; When he saw the fire, he suddenly lost his senses. When he came to his senses, a friend approached, Asking, "Why did the bird of your intellect fly away?" He said, "When I saw the fire at that time, The fire opened its tongue to describe its state. It said, 'Beware, lest out of base aspiration, You look upon me with a disrespectful eye. For I possess such intense heat and burning, And furthermore, this continues every night and day. Due to the blazing heat and burning in which I exist, I pay no heed to this handful of donkeys.' Whoever does not become like fire in love, His life in love will never be joyous. The lover must be ardently passionate in perishing; He must become obliterated in the pure beloved. On the path of your beloved, become traceless, So that you may forever be entirely the beloved."
