یک شبی میگفت یحیی ابن المعاد
گر مرا بخشند دوزخ در معاد

هیچ عاشق را نسوزم تا ابد
زانکه صد ره سوختست او از احد

هر که او یکبار نه صد بار سوخت
چون توان از بهر او آتش فروخت

سایلی گفتش اگر کار اوفتد
عاشقی را جرم بسیار اوفتد

سوزیش یانه چو باشد جرم کار
گفت نه کان جرم نبود اختیار

کار عاشق اضطراری اوفتد
زان ز فرط دوستداری اوفتد

هیچ عاشق را ملامت روی نیست
سوختن او را قیامت روی نیست

نیست رنج زیرکان در هیچ حال
سخت تر از صبر کردن بر محال

لیک عاشق کز محالی دم زند
گرمی او عالمی بر هم زند

گرمحالی گوید او واجب بود
ور حجابی افتدش حاجب بود

English translation

One night, Yahya ibn Mu'adh was saying, 'If they grant me Hell on the Day of Resurrection, I will not burn any lover for all eternity, Because he has already burned a hundred times by the One. Whoever has burned not once, but a hundred times, How can one kindle a fire for him?' A questioner said to him, 'If it so happens That a lover commits many sins, Will you burn him or not, since he is a sinner?' He said, 'No, for that sin is not by choice. The actions of a lover happen out of compulsion, They happen due to the excess of love. There is no justification for blaming a lover, There is no justification for burning him at the Resurrection. The suffering of the clever is, in no circumstance, Harder than being patient with the impossible. But a lover who speaks of the impossible, His passion turns a whole world upside down. If he speaks an impossibility, it is deemed necessary, And if a veil falls upon him, it acts as a protector.'
