Section 10 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A madman happened to sit in a graveyard, He brought the head of a dead man into his hands. He quickly plucked the hair from that head clean, And quickly threw it into the dust. A questioner asked him, 'What are you seeking from this?' He said, 'O oblivious one, why do you speak thus? This head could not be contained in the world, But at this time, not even a hair can fit. You have lost head and foot like a ball, What wandering is this, O ignorant one! Step aside from all the affairs of the world, Before they snatch you away from the midst. Since nothing has the face of permanence, Enmity and friendship have no face. As if the millstone of the sky ground or didn't grind, Whatever is, O my soul, was and was not. Since the face does not have the face to be here, There is no difference in being ugly or beautiful. Since hair has no hope of being, So now, whether you want it black or white. If someone came up high, they returned, Know it as a drop that returned to the sea. Do not grieve if a lightning smiled and died, A dewdrop fell into drowning and died. The business and affairs of the sensible world are nothing, Even if you strive for gold, copper is nothing. The life of the sensible world is a world, That is but a single breath beside the Truth. Whatever that one moment may be, good or ugly, I do not want it, even if all of it were paradise.'
