Section 5 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a noble Imam in Ghazni, His name was Mirah Abd al-Salam. When the renowned Imam spoke, Countless people would gather there. Whoever lost something in the city, Would go before the people on the day of the assembly, He would cry out about what he lost on the way, Then seek a sign from the people in that place. On the day of the assembly, there was a mourning man, Because that restless man had lost a donkey. Before the listening people of the assembly, The man who lost his donkey came crying out, Saying, 'O Muslims, who has found a donkey with a blanket? What a donkey, or rather a horse, that Duldul, who has found it?' Since no one gave a sign of the donkey there, The man fell to the dirt, shedding blood-tears from that sorrow. That Imam, in short, began to speak, He opened the book of lovers. He began to speak the description of love and lovers, And from the perfection of love, he became agitated. Then he said thus, that the atoms of the world, Are all in love, visibly and hiddenly. Is there anyone in the world who was not a lover, Or was not worthy of the perfection of love? Is there anyone in this assembly here, Who has barely found the path to the secret of love? An unaware man stood up; that simpleton thought, That not being a lover is a great feat. He said, 'Even though I have lived a full life, I have never had any love, O Imam!' Mirah said to the man who lost his donkey, 'Go bring a halter and take this dead man, For what you hurried in searching for, Thank God that you found it here! How can a man have any business without love? How could there be such a donkey without a halter? Count anyone who is not a lover as a donkey; A donkey is too much, count him as less than a donkey! Being a lover is in agility and nimbleness, Whoever is not a lover is a worm of the earth. Love sometimes brings you caresses, Sometimes, like a candle, it brings you melting. As long as you will not see melting at first, It is not possible for you to have caresses at the end.'
