آن یکی دیوانهٔ میگفت زار
کز همه عالم مرا اینست کار

تا کنم بر روی خاکستر نشست
خاک میریزم بسر از هر دو دست

هم پلاسی را بگردن افکنم
هم کنب را بر میان محکم کنم

اشک میبارم بزاری بردوام
چکنم و چکنم همی گویم مدام

تاکسی کو پیشم آید راز جوی
گویدم آخر چه بودت باز گوی

من بدو گویم که ای صاحب مقام
می ندانم می ندانم و السلام

چکنم و چکنم همیشه جفت ماست
می ندانم می ندانم گفت ماست

گر در این میدان کشندت یک دمی
برتو تابد از تحیر عالمی

ور ره این پرده نگشاید ترا
این همه افسانهٔ آید ترا

گر ترا دانش اگر نادانیست
آخر کار تو سرگردانیست

A certain madman would cry out bitterly, Saying, 'Of all the world, this is my work:

To sit upon ashes, Pouring dust on my head with both hands.

I throw a haircloth around my neck, And tie a coarse hemp rope firmly around my waist.

I rain down tears constantly in lamentation, Endlessly repeating, 'What shall I do? What shall I do?'

Until someone who seeks secrets comes before me, And says to me, 'Tell me at last, what has happened to you?'

I will say to him, 'O master of station! I do not know, I do not know, and that is all!'

'What shall I do? What shall I do?' is always my companion, 'I do not know, I do not know' is what I say.

If you are drawn into this field for a single moment, A world of bewilderment will shine upon you.

And if the way through this veil does not open for you, All of this will seem like a mere fable to you.

Whether you have knowledge or ignorance, In the end, your lot is bewilderment.'
