Section 2 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Jesus, son of Mary, passed by a man, He saw he had built a place of worship in the plain. A beautiful temple with a prayer niche within it, A green meadow with a spring of water in it. He said: 'O God-worshiping ascetic, In what work are you engaged, having settled here?' He said: 'A lifetime has passed, O renowned one, That I have been spending my days in devotion. I have a desire in this long life, Which God the Provider has not fulfilled.' Jesus said: 'What desire do you seek from the Friend?' He said: 'A single atom of His love.' Jesus requested that desire for him, Then went away, and the request was granted. After that, Jesus arrived at that place, He saw that temple hidden in the dust, Its spring of water had completely dried up, Its prayer niche was entirely broken into pieces. He said: 'O Lord, make it clear and right for me, Where is he, and from whence does this ruin come?' God said: 'Behold, he is on the top of the mountain; From head to toe, he is a mountain of grief.' Jesus went to the top of the mountain, and marvelously, Saw him with a pale face and dry lips, Suspended in bewilderment and frozen still, The Messiah could not tell him apart from the dead. Every hair on his body suffered a different pain, Every moment a new layer of dust fell upon his face. He had fallen headlong in blood and dust, Both of his eyes had sunk deep into their sockets. Jesus offered him greetings and addressed him, But no response or answer came from him. The Almighty spoke to Jesus in secret: 'That former state has become this due to his deep yearning. He requested an atom of love, And when I gave it to him, he detached from all else. He became heedless of his own existence, He was annihilated, left without head or feet. If I had increased it by a single atom, This self-lost one would have been torn atom by atom. With love, not even an atom of otherness can coexist; Not every boastful soul is fit for love. As long as any other remains in love, A pagan temple remains inside the Kaaba. When the name of others no longer remains in the heart, The veil will be completely lifted from the Beloved.'
