Section 23 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A certain Arab, drunk with love, Took hold of the Kaaba's ring, Crying bitterly, he said: 'O God of Exalted Majesty, I have done my part; where is Yours? If You ordered me to perform Hajj, Hajj was done. Whatever You commanded has been carried out. And if I had to stand in Arafat, I stood, and I paid the dues of the Ihram. I performed the Sa'i and came to the sacrifice, I came to the stoning of the pillars by command. And if You speak of Tawaf and Umrah, they are completed. What else can come from me? And that is all. Do not keep me deprived from Your door. My part has passed, bring forth Yours. O Creator, what I could do has been done, Life is gone, and good or bad has been done. How long will You break the heart of a few handfuls of dust? Who can bring blood running from the veins to You? Even if I bring a world of obedience before You, You are entirely independent and free of need from it all. And if my cash is a world full of sin, You are independent of that, O King. Since goodness from You is not due to a cause, No evil-speaker will see evil from You. Whatever grace of Yours from the ocean of generosity, Aided me if it came into existence from me. Now at this moment I sit waiting, I have no heart, because I have tied it to You. My affair has fallen at Your door at this time, I have no other door at this time. Assume that I just came at this moment, Even though I came very late, I still came. Since no action from You is due to a cause, Forgive me without cause, O Creator. Though my disbelief and my sin are enough, The very essence of Your forgiveness is enough of an apologist for me. If You give me a single atom of fortune, Then give it, since You do not give it for a cause. My lips have gone dry, O Lord, from saying 'O Lord', In the sorrow of my tainted garment. I go astray, having not found the path, The heart, like a ledger, finding nothing but blackness. Be my guide and wash my ledger, And wash the board of my soul clean of both worlds. I have endless heartache from You, If I have a soul, I am ashamed of You. I spent my life in sorrow for You, I wish I had a hundred other lives, So that I could spend them in sorrow for You, Bearing another pain every moment. I am stuck in a hundred distresses because of myself, Take my hand, O You who take my hand.'
