گفت چون هاروت و ماروت از گناه
اوفتادند از فلک در قعر چاه

هر دو تن را سرنگون آویختند
تادرون چاه خون میریختند

هر دو تن را تشنگی در جان فتاد
زانکه آتش در دل ایشان فتاد

تشنگی غالب چنان شد هر دو را
کز غم یک آب جان شد هردو را

هر دو تن از تشنگی میسوختند
همچوآتش تشنه میافروختند

بود ازآب زلال آن قعر چاه
تا لب آن هر دویک انگشت راه

نه لب ایشان بر انجا میرسید
نه ز چاه آبی به بالا میرسید

سرنگون آویخته در تف و تاب
تشنه میمردند لب بر روی آب

تشنگیشان گر یکی بود از شمار
در بر آن آب میشد صد هزار

بر لب آب آن دو تن را خشک لب
تشنگی میسوخت جانها ای عجب

هر زمانی تشنگیشان بیش بود
وی عجب آبی چنان در پیش بود

تشنگان عالم کون و فساد
پیش دارند ای عجب آب مراد

جمله درآبند و کس آگاه نیست
یا نمیبینند یا خود راه نیست

English translation

He said: when Harut and Marut due to sin Fell from the sky into the depths of a well, Both were hung upside down, As they shed tears of blood inside the well. Thirst struck the souls of both, Because fire fell into their hearts. Thirst so overpowered them both, That their souls were exhausted longing for water. Both were burning from thirst, Igniting like fire in their thirst. From the clear water at the bottom of that well, To the lips of both, it was but a finger's breadth. Neither did their lips reach there, Nor did any water rise from the well. Hung upside down in heat and agony, They were dying of thirst, lips poised over the water. If their thirst could be counted as one, Near that water, it became a hundred thousand. On the edge of the water, those two with dry lips, Oh, what a wonder! Thirst was burning their souls. Every moment their thirst was greater, And oh wonder, such water was right before them. The thirsty ones of the realm of existence and corruption, Oh wonder! Have the water of desire before them. All are in the water and no one is aware, Either they do not see, or there is no path.
