Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a king who called for Majnun, He seated him on a chair before his own throne. He said: 'With so many beauties in the world, Why have you become mute and silent for Layla?' Then he called the beauties from every side, Presenting them before his face. He said: 'O Majnun, see that this one beauty Is a thousand times better than someone like Layla.' But Majnun kept his head bowed and that was all, He did not look towards a single beauty for even a moment. The king said to him: 'Look at last, And see these many silver-bodied beauties, So that finally your problem may be resolved, And the love of Layla may grow cold in your heart.' From the depth of his pain, Majnun opened his tongue, And from his two flooding eyes, blood began to flow. He said: 'O King, the exalted love of Layla Has stood firm again within my soul.' Then, holding a naked sword in his hand, He swore an oath: 'O drunken, arrogant one! If you cast a glance at other than us for a single moment, You would unknowingly spill the blood of your own life. To see the face of Joseph and to live on, And then to look in another direction— When the sight of Joseph is present before us, No other connection can ever enter.' If you wish to be a man of secrets, Never look towards anything else until eternity. Because if you cast your gaze anywhere else, You will cast your own head into your lap.
