Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A master had a clever parrot, Whose greenness turned poison to antidote. For a whole year, he gave it sugar, Hoping it would speak and pour out sweetness. Day and night, he set his heart on its affair, Weary with longing for its speech. Though he fed it sugar for a full year, It did not speak a single word in any way. At last, a very unpleasant event occurred: A fire broke out in the master's house. When the fire reached around the cage, Its heat reached the lovely parrot. It cried out, 'O master, mercy! Save me! Lest I burn in the fire this very moment!' The master said, 'Since such a thing has happened, Do you remember me at such a time? You held your breath day and night completely, From where did you bring this speech now? Since you are helpless in fear of your life, You have called me in the shortcoming of your helplessness. You have called me to you for your own sake; You have called me to you to ward off the fire. If the fire had not made your soul restless, You would never have had any business with me. My remembrance always came to you like the wind, Yet at such a time, you remembered me. Since you remembered me like a stranger, Now surrender your body to burn like a moth. Whoever is not like Abraham in the fire, If he burns like the parrot, there is no fear. Until one task does not clash with another, O boy, How will you ever find out what helplessness is? True friendship is the very essence of helplessness; If you are a friend, seek less of freedom. Your path is to fall upside down, For your improvement lies in falling into a worse state.'
