بخش ۲۰ - الحكایة و التمثیل / Section 20 - The Tale and the Parable

کودکی میرفت و در ره میگریست
کاملی گفتش که این گریه ز چیست

گفت بر استاد باید خواند درس
چون ندارم یاد میگریم ز ترس

هرچه در یک هفته گفت استاد باز
این زمانم جمله باید داد باز

زین غمم شاید اگر دل خون کنم
چوب سخت و نیست نرم چون کنم

زین سخن آن پیر کامل شد ز دست
پشت امیدش از آن کودک شکست

گفت حال و کار من یک یک همه
هست همچون حال این کودک همه

خوش بخفته نرم ناکرده سبق
می بباید رفت فردا پیش حق

نیست درسم نرم سختم اوفتاد
زآنکه در پیش است چوب اوستاد

پادشاها آمد این درویش تو
با جهانی درد دل در پیش تو

گر جهانی طاعتم حاصل بود
گر نخواهی تو همه باطل بود

گر نخواهی دولت غمخوارهٔ
کی بود ناخواستن را چارهٔ

گر همه توفیق و گر خذلان بود
آنچه آن باید ترا اصل آن بود

چون حواله باتو آمد هرچه هست
درگذر از نیک و از بد هر چه هست

English translation

A child was walking on the road and crying, A perfect one said to him, 'What is this crying for?' He said, 'I must recite my lesson to the master, Since I do not remember it, I cry out of fear. Whatever the master taught in a week, I must give it all back this time. From this sorrow, it is fitting if my heart bleeds, The stick is hard and the lesson is not soft, what shall I do?' From these words, that perfect elder lost his composure, The back of his hope was broken by that child. He said, 'My state and my deeds, each and every one, Are exactly like the state of this child. Having slept pleasantly, without preparing my lesson, Tomorrow I must go before the Truth (God). My lesson is not soft, hardship has fallen upon me, Because the stick of the Master is ahead. O King, this dervish of Yours has come, With a world of heartache before You. Even if a world of obedience is achieved by me, If You do not will it, it is all in vain. If You do not will the fortune of the sorrowful, When is there a remedy for Your not willing? Whether it is all divine grace or abandonment, What is required of You, that is the essence of it. Since whatever exists is consigned to You, Overlook the good and the bad, whatever there is.'
