Section 9 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

When Hatim al-Tai departed from this world He had a brother who sat in his place He said, 'I will open the doors of generosity Like my brother, I will open my hand In generosity, I will perform magic Like the ocean, I will reveal jewels.' His mother said to him, 'How could you ever do this? Though you will undoubtedly tarnish the name of Hatim Tai. For at the time when Hatim was a child He would only bring his lips to one of my breasts When from the other breast, much or little Another child was drinking milk beside him. If there was no other child beside him He would have an aversion to his mother's milk. But you, back when you were a suckling infant You would not tolerate any other child. You had no inclination for my milk for a single moment Unless you had firmly secured the other breast. You had one breast in your hand at that time And the other breast placed in your mouth. This one you held in your mouth And the other you left for no one else. He who shows such stinginess in childhood How can he ever act like Hatim? If the brother drank milk like Hatim Wherever there is a bird, it would eat figs. Affairs are better when strong from the foundation Innate fortune and destiny are better. If you read my poetry, O person of pure faith See my poetry as pure from mere verse-making. Do not count me a poet, for I am not content with that I am a man of spiritual states, not a poet of the past. The flaw is in this poetry, and these are not mere verses Poetry has no value in the eyes of anyone. Do not read it as mere poetry if you are a reader Find the path to the inner meaning if you are a knower. Since composing poetry arose from the path of meter And it fell into place with refrain and rhyme If there is a slight difference in the narrative It does not appear awry to a man of intellect. Since my poetry is jewel-studded like a sword Do not withhold your praise from me for a moment. An intelligent person is needed to praise me To honor me with many a well done. But if a fool praises me That has no value, I do not need this.'
