Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Bahlool was intoxicated with the wine of love, He happened to sit upon a bridge on a path. Harun chanced to pass by that place, While Bahlool was in a blissful state, with his head bowed down. Harun said to him, 'O drunken Bahlool! Rise from here, for how can one sit on a bridge?' He replied, 'Say this to yourself, O Amir, Why have you settled and taken up residence on a bridge? The entire world is a bridge and an overpass, Look upon your bridge, where there are so many pavilions. Even if you build many a palace and door upon the bridge, There is water all around beneath the bridge. What is a house on the bridge? A shackle for your neck! How can one escape this bridge through trickery? As much as you can, do not settle under the bridge; When the bridge breaks, do not feel secure. The sky has a crack from the Milky Way, Pass by quickly so you are not utterly crushed. You are sitting beneath a broken dome, As if you have become weary of your own soul. When the broken dome collapses, How can anyone escape, even if he is a lion? Death is ahead, and you are following behind, You go after carrion like a vulture. Cleanse yourself entirely of the world's carcass, Otherwise, you will remain trapped like a corpse. Because whatever is your worldly ambition, When you die, it becomes your currency for tomorrow.'
