نان پزی دیوانه و بیچاره شد
وز میان نان پزان آواره شد

شهر میگشتی چو پی گم کردهٔ
گردهٔ میخواستی بی کردهٔ

سایلی پرسید ازو کای حیله جوی
گردهٔ بی کرده چون باشد بگوی

گفت تا من پختمی یک گرده نان
گردهٔ نو در رسیدی همچنان

تا بپختی گردهٔ ای بیخبر
در بر ریشم نهادندی دگر

چون سری پیدا نبد این گرده را
سر بگردید از جنون این مرده را

بر دلم چیزی درآمد از اله
گفت صد گرده مپز یک گرده خواه

روز تا شب گردهٔ نان میبست
گردهٔ آخر رسد از صد کست

خوش خوشی میرو میانراه تو
گردهٔ بی کردهٔ میخواه تو

چارهٔ صد گرده میبایست کرد
تا مرا یک گرده میبایست خورد

این زمان هر روز شکر میخورم
به زنان صد چیز دیگر میخورم

گرترا نان نرسد از حق زان بود
تادلت پیوسته سرگردان بود

زانکه گر سرگشتهٔ نان خواهدش
ندهدش نان زانکه گریان خواهدش

English translation

A baker became mad and helpless And became an outcast among the bakers He roamed the city like one who had lost his way He wanted a loaf of bread without having to make it An inquirer asked him, 'O seeker of tricks, Tell me, how can there be a loaf without making it?' He said, 'While I baked one loaf of bread, A new loaf would arrive just the same. By the time you baked a loaf, O unaware one, They would put another in front of my face. Since there was no end to this bread, This dead man's head spun from madness. Something entered my heart from God, It said, Do not bake a hundred loaves, ask for one loaf. From day to night you shape the dough for bread, In the end, a loaf arrives from a hundred people. Go happily on your middle path, And seek your unmade loaf. I had to manage a hundred loaves, Just so I could eat a single loaf. Now, every day I eat sugar, Better than bread, I eat a hundred other things. If bread does not reach you from God, it is because Your heart has been constantly wandering. For if a bewildered one asks Him for bread, He gives him no bread, because He wants him weeping.'
