ابن ادهم کرد ازان رهبان سؤال
کز کجا سازی تو قوتی حسب حال

گفت از روزی دهنده بازپرس
روزیم او میدهد زو راز پرس

چون بظاهر روزیئی بینی حلال
میمکن از باطن روزی سؤال

ترک جان پاک هر روزی کنی
تا زجائی چارهٔ روزی کنی

ای شده غافل ز مجروحی خویش
چند در بازی سبک روحی خویش

ای سبک دل گشته از خواب گران
وی بخورد و خواب قانع چون خران

تا نیائی تو به همرنگی برون
کی شود از تو گران سنگی برون

چون به همرنگی سبک گردی چو کاه
در کشندت زود سوی بارگاه

کاه چون با کهربا همرنگ بود
کهربا را زآن بدو آهنگ بود

بود مغناطیس چون آهن برنگ
زآن بهم رنگی درآوردش به تنگ

چون کسی در اصل همرنگ اوفتاد
دولتش زآغاز هم تنگ اوفتاد

English translation

Ibn Adham asked that monk a question: 'From where do you obtain your daily sustenance?' He said, 'Ask the Provider of sustenance; He gives me my sustenance, ask Him the secret of it. When you see a lawful sustenance outwardly, Do not question the inner aspect of sustenance. Every day you abandon your pure soul, In order to find a way to secure daily bread from somewhere. O you who have become heedless of your own wounded state, How long will you gamble with your light-spiritedness? O you who have become light-hearted from heavy sleep, And are content with eating and sleeping like donkeys! Until you emerge into matching color (homogeneity), How can your heavy stone-like nature be cast out of you? When through matching color you become light as straw, They will quickly draw you toward the Divine Court. Since straw was of the same color as amber, Amber therefore had a pull toward it. The magnet was of the same color as iron, Therefore, through that shared color, it drew it close. When someone is of the same color in their essence, Their fortune from the beginning is closely bound.'
