Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a madman who wandered constantly in the desert, From time to time, he would come to the city from the desert. When that unaware one arrived in the city, He would stand cheerfully and observe. Hundreds of thousands of people were before and behind him, All of them running, their heads full of worldly desires. He would look on, standing in silence, He became bewildered by all that commotion and uproar. When he had stood like that for an entire day, He grew weary of both the elite and the commoners. He let out a cry and leaped up from his place, And out of astonishment, he said, "Alas, alas! Alas for the leather bottle and the bottle-maker! There are already so many bottles, yet he brings another. It will be like this even if a single grain Is bought by someone who needs a bottle. Do not boast about the leather bottle and the basket, If you are a Solomon, go and weave baskets! Work, become sincere, and free yourself from deceit and flaws, Because a good seam does not easily set on a leather bottle. You are an ostrich on this path, not a true servant, You have thrown a leather bottle at the camel's feet. The entire world is filled with your rushing, The pomp and noise is all from your leather bottle and basket. No one can easily get even a round loaf of bread from you, You would give up your soul, but you would not give bread to anyone. Although you do not rest from yourself for a moment, You never rest from your worldly work either. You have adopted the religion of Zoroaster at your door, This is not the religion of Muhammad, O son."
